Foreclosure Prevention Services

If you or someone you know is struggling to keep their home, you need to know that help is available from local non-profit organizations.  It is also important that you be careful not to become a victim of mortgage fraud.  Watch the following video, Real People, Real Stories (Foreclosure Scams), produced by the Federal Trade Commission to learn how to protect yourself against foreclosure and mortgage scams.

One of the best moves you can make is to call and meet with a local non-profit foreclosure prevention  counselor.  These counselors can help you sort out your options and help you pursue a work out  with your lender.  The following local non-profit organizations have foreclosure prevention and loss mitigation counselors on staff:

 * These agencies offer bilingual (in English and Spanish) foreclosure prevention and
    loss mitigation services.
Homeowners in Oregon who need help making their payments should also research what type of assistance is available from the State of Oregon.  Recently the U.S. Department of Treasury approved Oregon’s plans for four new foreclosure prevention programs on August 4. This is an important step in getting help to Oregon homeowners who face losing their homes as a result of the current recession.  OHCS expects to have the programs up and running by the end of 2010.  For more information visit www.oregonhomeownerhelp.org.

Another option to consider for those struggling to make ends meet is to rent out a room.  PHB funds Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon's Shared Housing Program to match homeowners with qualified renters.

Other Foreclosure Prevention Resources

In addition to the organizations listed above, the State of Oregon's Department of Consumer and Business Services' (DCBS) "Foreclosure Help" Web site contains relevant information and links to help you better understand and prevent foreclosures.  Here are some helpful links listed their web site:

Avoid and Report Mortgage Fraud

As the number of foreclosures has increased, so has the number of foreclosure-related scams targeting consumers. Homeowners are urged to avoid counselors who charge an up-front fee and also should check the organization's credentials prior to signing any contracts or paying any fees. State Attorney General John Kroger also has developed a good Web page to learn about, report and avoid mortgage fraud.

The Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force's StopFraud. gov Web site also provides some excellent information to help consumers identify, prevent and report mortgage and other types of financial fraud.
