POL Government Bureaus & Offices Human Relations

OUR MISSION

The Office of Human Relations and the Human Rights Commission have a shared mission to:

  • Eliminate discrimination and bigotry,
  • Strengthen inter-group relationships, and
  • Foster greater understanding, inclusion, and justice in Portland.

Our work is guided by the principles embodied in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

OUR WORK

The Office of Human Relations is a new City of Portland service, established in March 2008 to address discriminatory practices and ensure that Portland is a safe, inclusive, just and harmonious community for all.

The OHR staff and programs support the newly re-established Human Rights Commission in a shared mission to address structural inequities and discriminatory practices in Portland, and build positive relations among communities.

The Office of Human Relations provides leadership on civil and human rights issues through coordination of advocacy, education, research, and intervention services.
