We hope you saw Helen Silvis' piece in this morning's Skanner. "After World Wars I and II, the Medal of Honor was awarded to 549 of America's bravest. Incredibly," she writes, "not one black soldier, of the 1.5 million who served, was among their number."

Commissioner Fish is working to bring recognition to Henry Johnson, a member of the 369th Infantry Regiment in WWI. The Commissioner's grandfather, Hamilton Fish Jr., was a Catain in that regiment.

Did you know that more than 2/3 of students at 27 of Portland's elementary and K-8 schools are eligible for free or reduced lunch?

One local program working to make the transition back to school positive and exciting for kids is Tools for Schools, a partnership of Schoolhouse Supplies and Knowledge Universe. The Tools for Schools Backpack Giveaway Program pairs local high-needs schools with businesses to provide a backpack full of supplies to each student on the first day of school.

This year, the Tools for Schools program will benefit all 27 of Portland Public Schools' high-needs schools.

Nick was very proud to be a part of the backpack giveaway event this morning at Beach Elementary, a neighborhood bilingual school in North Portland.

Our office was honored to work with Schoolhouse Supplies on ReUse Week 2010 and the founding of ReUse PDX - they are fantastic community partners. Congratulations on another successful program!
