City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development
The Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center

The Office of Sustainable Development is located in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center, the country’s first Historic LEED Gold renovation project. Originally constructed as a warehouse in 1895, the Natural Capital Center building was revitalized into a beautifully restored green office and retail center in 2001. Green features include an ecoroof and bioswales that treat stormwater on-site, extensive use of salvage and FSC certified wood, non toxic materials, and host of energy and water efficiency measures.

We are conveniently located in NW Portland’s Pearl District at 10th Avenue and Irving Street. The Natural Capital Center is readily accessible by Portland Streetcar (10th and Johnson Stop), bicycle (w/ ample parking), Tri-Met bus line #77, or by foot. We have a limited number of free visitor parking spots for cars, and much more metered parking on the surrounding streets. For more information about the building, or detailed directions to our office please call us at the number above.

Many idle electronics – TVs, VCRs, DVD and CD players, cordless phones, microwaves – use energy even when switched off to keep display clocks lit and memory chips and remote controls working. Nationally, these energy “vampires” use 5 percent of our domestic energy and cost consumers more than $3 billion annually.
